Appearance

Short Description :
A black smoke tabby bi-color tom with silver-edged gold eyes and polydactyl paws
Long Description :
Not exactly the stereotypical WindClanner, Echofly is an average sized, well-muscled tom. He has a short, streamlined pelt, good for swimming in the rivers and streams that RiverClan calls home. Yes, he is not of RiverClan; nevertheless, he swims or fishes when given the chance, rather than chasing after the bunnies of his own home turf – something he is not entirely built for, making him slower than many of his Clanmates.

The tom has swirls of ebony fur covering his back, legs and tail – if one looks closely enough and he stands in the sunlight, it appears that Echofly has been dipped in a can of black paint that is slightly darker than the rest of his pelt, causing such odd markings. But Echofly is not entirely black – rather, he has patches of white on his chest, stomach and paws, along with a streak on one paw.

The tom’s eyes are slightly odd as well – the angle is slightly off, if he is to be compared to other cats, and they are graced with a silver tint to the otherwise yellow color. Holding some depth of mystery and mischevousness, such eyes can hypnotize one for many moments as one tries to figure him out. His ears appear slightly small, and he has a rather triangular face.

But even this, it seems, are not his ‘oddest’ features – or the ones he is most proud of. Echofly has large paws with five toes each - an oddity among cats, and one that he has been teased about often. However, due to this and the grippy quality of his pads, he has a superb sense of balance and is an amazing climber, always a daredevil in that regard, and climbing trees or walking across ledges where no others would dare.
Personality

Echofly is a complex character. He has mood swings galore, though is generally a pretty trustworthy cat. Loyal, brave, and caring could all describe him, although they are rarely things his Clanmates would think of if asked to describe him. Instead they would probably say rude, brash, or impulsive – all of which are equally true, though generally qualities that come out in him when he’s with others, rather than on his own.

Echofly is a hard cat to understand because of this. Rather anti-social, he does not like to have deep conversations, or even talk much at all, particularly with those he doesn’t know. Even so, he is quite opinionated, and it is a rare time when he isn’t speaking up or thinking about one thing or another. His ideas are often quite clever, but dismissed more than they ought due to his bad reputation.

Very little gets by the dark-colored tom, for he makes it his business to notice and know everything. This might be because he doesn’t like asking questions too often, along with the fact that he doesn’t like being kept in the dark – and of course has a good amount of curiousity. Despite this, he does not like gossips – Echofly finds things out for the sake of finding things out, rather than for having a juicy tidbit of news to share with his friends.

Friendship – another thing in which Echofly is lacking. Despite his loyalty to the Clan and the kindness he shows once his outer armor is removed, he is close to no one. He had his siblings once, but now that is no more, and thus he is often alone. True, the tom has learned to be independent and has always hated to lean on others – but this does not mean that, underneath his thorns, he doesn’t often want a shoulder to lean on, or something more than he now has.

But the final thing that Echofly missed – and has missed since early on in life – is the ability to trust. Perhaps it was some inborn thing; maybe it came from his father’s neglect or loosing his sister and then – some moons later – his brother, in everything but blood. Whatever the reason, Echofly rarely shares his secrets, and is the keeper of no one else’s. He is not well trusted by the rest of the Clan, which only increases the walls around his soul.

When he was younger, Echopaw and his siblings were infamous among their Clanmates for causing trouble wherever they could. Now Echofly does so much less, but is still capable of causing mischief when he desires. It is one of the few things that brings him true enjoyment, though he plays jokes on others less and less as he retreats farther into himself. If something doesn’t give, Echofly will become a cynical elder that everyone hates – and he will become even more lost than he already is; more lost than he would ever guess. So he had better hope something does change, and fast.
History

Key Dates
Full History :
It was a dark night. Few would have been stupid enough to leave the warm safety of their dens alone, for the rain was coming down in torrents and it was hard to hear oneself think over the noise of the thunder. But Onesky had no choice: his mate had gone out hunting earlier, though she was heavily pregnant, and had not yet returned. No one else in the warrior’s den understood – they all cautioned him to be careful, and a couple even had the gall to say that he should wait out the storm now, and go find Marbledleaf once it had subsided. As if.

Not a soul stirred, and all scents had been washed away by the heavy rain. So it was by luck, and luck alone, that Onesky happened by Sunningrocks on that dreadful night. He didn’t have to worry about predators of course – what creature would be stupid enough to venture out now, of all times? – but hearing a cry he quickly identified – Marbledleaf – he broke into a run.

The father got there just in time to see his third kit born, and his mate give a shudder before falling still. Sliding over the slippery rocks, he arrived by her side and pressed himself up against her. Licking the two balls of fluff that lay before him instinctively, the two new parents were found by a patrol sometime later the next day.

All were sleeping but a single black and white kit, who was in the process of mewling pitifully, from cold, damp, and hunger – both parents had collapsed much earlier, and his sister had grown still, but being not even a day old, he – obviously – had nothing to do but cry.

It was discovered that one kit was stillborn, while the other two – the black tom-kit and a ghost-striped black and white she-kit – had survived, although it seemed to be hard for the orange one to breathe. All five cats were hustled back to camp, where they were seen to immediately. The stillborn kit was given a proper burial along with his mother, Marbledleaf, who died – or so the medicine cat said – due to the combined effects of the cold, wet, and a hard birth with no one to help.

Onesky was crushed. He could not bear to lay eyes on either of his kits, who were named with Marbledleaf’s last breaths – Flykit and Echokit – for they reminded him too much of his lost love. Thus his kittens were given to another queen – Songweave – to raise, for she had only one kit of her own and plenty of milk to spare. Echokit, Flykit, and their new adoptive brother, Galekit, grew quite close, although as Galekit was much more outgoing than either of his adoptive siblings, he had more friends, so hung out with them less.

Flykit was always sickly – they decided that it was due to the harshness of her birth, although to be honest, her siblings and adoptive mother did not need a reason. They worried about her whatever the cause; only the medicine cat wished to know the exact whys of the circumstances. Still, she was apprenticed along with Echokit and Galekit – the three of them becoming Echopaw, Flypaw, and Galepaw.

But Flypaw never received her warrior name, although she was ready. At the age of eleven moons, she developed a cold. Instead of getting better after a day or two, however, Flypaw’s cold only got worse – though no one ever figured out the reason. Echopaw spent every moment he could in the medicine cat’s den with her, and as much as the healer tried to shoo him away, he refused to budge. Galepaw spent time there as well, but another young apprentice she-cat had caught is eye – and he spent much of his time padding after her.

Still, Flypaw suffered for only a few days. She died in her sleep with Echopaw curled up beside her, passing on to StarClan peacefully. For her brothers, on the other hand, she did not pass on so peacefully. Both came down to earth quite hard when Echopaw awoke to find that she had grown cold in the night, and Echopaw was afraid to sleep for some weeks - even moons - afterwards, fearing that he would again loose something important.

The day after their sister’s burial, the two toms received their warrior names: Galedance and – upon request – Echofly. Because of this, it was not, perhaps, as sad a time as it could have been – but neither was the naming ceremony as exciting and wonderful as it is when every apprentice and kit dreams of that wonderful new name being – finally, finally – gifted to them, in appreciation of all they had done and would yet do in service of their Clan.

Echofly and Galedance were both closer and farther apart after this occurance, however. Galedance had more friends than Echofly, for one thing – Echofly had been closest to Flypaw, though was aquainted with the others of his Clan – and for another, they each delt with their sister’s death in a different way. While Echofly spent some moons mourning her before perking up again, at least somewhat (although his ex-mentor had to basically hit him over the head and say “this has got to stop” before any change was made), Galedance only grew more rambunctious.

It has been many moons since those days, though Echofly remembers every detail as if he were re-living it. Galedance and the she-cat he fancied did manage to become mates, though Galedance was hit by a Thunderpath monster some seasons ago – yet another thing for Echofly to mourn and regret. But the warrior lives on as if nothing happened, masking his feelings under many, many covering layers.

And what happened to Onesky, you ask? He was last seen not long after Echofly was named a warrior, heading in the direction of Mothermouth – but he has not been seen since then, and his whereabouts – and condition – are unknown.

On the twelfth day of the Moon of Long Nights (2006), Echofly and Thornpelt came across the Killer, a Fisher named Sair Fen. Echofly sacrificed himself so that Thornpelt could flee. Because of Echofly's heroism, Thornpelt became the first cat to see the Killer and live to tell the tale. This gave the Clans invaluable information about their mysterious tormentor. Since his death, Echofly's become a legendary cat.
