Personality
While she had, in her old age, assumed the thorny and contentious mask of a grumpy elder, Ivypelt had a softer side which she rarely showed. She had lost many things dear to her through her life, and that above all other things compelled her to pull her true self back behind her prickly outer shell.

Full History :
Born and raised as a loyal, respectful kit along with her two brothers, Ivypaw was apprenticed at the usual age. The brothers, although the same age as her, liked to assume themselves older and act like it. This was sometimes annoying, sometimes comforting to Ivypaw.
She was a very eager, sometimes naive apprentice, learning as much as she could with a constant "cool! now what?" attitude. Despite the occasional spat with her brothers, she was very close to them, and looked up to them. Both young toms, however, were killed a few moons before they would have been made warriors, as they were joking around near Silverfall gorge. A dare gone wrong took both their lives, and their bodies were never recovered. The shock brought Ivypaw crashing down from her happy state. So great was her sudden drop that she barely passed her final evaluation, and was made a warrior (Ivypelt) without any feeling of joy. Her only thoughts were for her beloved brothers. Her parents, who had never been very involved in their kits' lives, were no option to share her heartbreak with. Ivypelt was forced to bear the burden alone, and as time wore on, she gradually recovered---or, at least, learned to appear that way. When she was twenty-two moons old, the burden of her grief had lessened, but was still enough that she wanted to distract herself. She decided that she wanted to find a mate and have kits, to fill the emptiness inside herself. Finally, she found a tom. He was not someone she knew well, but he was a kind enough tom and agreed to sire kits with her. The tom treated her well, and Ivypelt grew comfortable enough around him that she spilled out her griefs to him, and he listened. Although she'd not expected to, she'd found something of a friend. Ivypelt soon was expecting his kits. As it turned out, it was only one kit, a little tortoiseshell who was miscarried a moon before her time. The kit was stillborn. Ivypelt's renewed grief drove her into depression. Her mate was not terribly affected by the loss, and didn't understand why Ivypelt was now so often found staring bleakly into space. They grew distant, and Ivypelt was alone again. Short of killing herself, there was no way out, and so she eventually learned to cope. And so her life wore on. She had very little joy left in her, and because she couldn't bear the emptiness, she filled it with resentment, barbed comments, scorn. When she joined the elders' den, she had no expectations except to eventually die. However, that changed when a mouthy young apprentice started frequenting the den. Spottedpaw's unpredictable outbursts earned her frequent punishments, and the two she-cats started spending undue amounts of time in each others' presence. Well, before long Ivypelt and Spottedpaw had warmed to each other and were fast friends. Ivypelt could always tell when Spottedpaw needed someone to listen, or when she needed someone to spar with sharp words. The only problem that Ivypelt could see was Spottedpaw's unnatural views on mates. Ivypelt remembered the apprentice's father, Rippedclaw. He'd been a strange one, certainly, with his rants on faithfulness and the Warrior Code. He had not had a particularly good influence on his daughter, as far as Ivypelt could see. When Spottedpaw became a warrior, Ivypelt was surprised---and honored---to find that the apprentice-cum-warrior had requested the name of Ivynose. Soon after, though, Ivypelt caught the Killingcough, early in the moon named for that disease. She knew she was going to die, and only wanted to keep Ivynose away so the young warrior would be safe. Ivypelt died not long ago---recent enough to have kept her face fresh in Ivynose's mind. |
