Common Name: Deadly Nightshade
Other Name(s): Belladonna,  Black Cherry
Description: The perennial root is thick and white. The purplish, stout stem is about 2 to 4 feet high, undivided at the base, but dividing a little above the ground into multiple branches.

The leaves are dull, darkish green in color, 3 to 10 inches long.

The fresh plant, when crushed, exhales a disagreeable odor, almost disappearing on drying, and the leaves have a bitter taste, when both fresh and dry.

The flowers are purple tinged with green. The berry is shining black, full of dark, sweet juice and several seeds.

Properties: A poisonous plant, that causes a cat who swallows any part of it to die if not given immediate help. May be used to reduce swelling. While poisonous, parts of the plant may be used to reduce swelling and pain when applied externally.

When to Collect : Mid to late Greenleaf
How to Collect : Pluck the berry from its calyx, taking extreme care not to perforate the skin.
How to Preserve : Leave in full sun to dry, out of reach of other creatures.
How to Store : Store in neat piles, out of reach of other creatures. Due to its poisonous properties, many medicine cats choose not to store any part of deathberry.

When to Collect : Late Greenleaf
How to Collect : Fresh leaves of food color should be plucked from the plant.
How to Preserve : Lay the leaves in the sun so that they may dry quickly, out of reach of other creatures.
How to Store : Store in loose piles, out of reach of other creatures. Due to its poisonous properties, many medicine cats choose not to store any part of deathberry.
Collecting & Storing Root
When to Collect : Mid to late Greenleaf.
How to Collect : The roots should be dug carefully, never taking more than half the roots in a growth area so as not to destroy the plant itself. Take care not to keep any that are overly soft or at all worm-eaten.
How to Preserve : The roots should be washed, then laid in full sun until fully dried, out of reach of other creatures.
How to Store : Store in neat piles in a cool, dry place, out of reach of other creatures. Due to its poisonous properties, many medicine cats choose not to store any part of deathberry.

Berries : Will kill any cat that consumes them, if the cat is not given immediate help.
Leaves : Mix with water and apply externally to reduce swelling and pain. Never apply to an open wound.
Root : Mix with water and apply externally to reduce swelling and pain. Never apply to an open wound.
