This page outlines the laws of the Cats of Camelot, and the legal system they employ.

Laws

  • No cat shall commit murder within the borders of the Kingdom.
    • The penalty shall, when that murder was premeditated, be death.
    • The penalty in the event the death is deemed accidental shall be service to the family of the deceased for a term of 2 years.
  • No cat shall commit theft within the borders of the Kingdom of Camelot.
    • The penalty shall be flogging by an agent of the throne.
  • No cat shall bring violence to bear against another cat within the borders of the Kingdom, except by direct order of the throne in defense of the safety and sanctity of the Kingdom itself, or by an individual as a means of defense from violence being brought against themselves while within the borders of the Kingdom of Camelot.
    • The penalty shall reflect the scale of the violence inflicted, at the discretion of the throne.
  • No cat shall, through plan or action, bring to bear a against the Throne of Camelot a plot intended to depose the Throne or any of the Agents of that Throne.
    • The penalty shall be death of such conspirators.
  • No male shall, by virtue of force or manipulation, force copulation onto a female within the borders of the Kingdom of Camelot.
    • The penalty in the first instance shall be service to the crown for 2 years.
    • The penalty in the second instance shall be death.
  • No cat shall practice the arts of witchcraft, nor teach it, within the borders of the Kingdom of Camelot.
    • The penalty in the first instance shall be flogging.
    • The penalty in the second instance shall be flogging & a years service to the crown.
    • The penalty in the third instance shall be death.
  • No cat can own property, save by order of the Throne of Camelot within the borders of the Kingdom of Camelot. All land not granted by the throne is considered to be property of the throne.
    • The penalty for shall be exile if the claimant does not forfeit said claim.
  • A marriage shall not be considered legally binding until it is presented to the Throne for recognition by the Kingdom.
    • The penalty shall be exile if the claimant refuses enter into a lawful marriage before the throne.
  • Agents of the Throne, comprising any cat who has received a Knighthood, Lordship or a royal seat, have within their powers the right to take into custody any cat found or suspected of wrongdoing in accordance with the laws of the Kingdom of Camelot. Refusal to bow to this right is strictly forbidden.
  • In the case that a cat refuses arrest, the Agent of the Throne is hereby granted to the right to use violent force to make that arrest.
  • Continued resistance authorizes that Agent to use further force, up to and including deadly force.

Legal System

Following the arrest of a cat, or the report of a crime that culminates in an arrest, the following legal proceedings are undertaken at the next session of the Court of Camelot. In cases of extreme crimes, the Throne may choose to call an immediate session to deal with the case.


Rendering the Plea

  1. The Accused is brought before the throne. The arresting Agent of the Throne reads the charges.
  2. The King, Queen or a Proxy (assigned by the King or Queen) [To be referred to from this point on in this documentation as "the Throne"] makes the following demand. "You <NAME> have been accused of <CRIME>. Do you plead Guilty or Not Guilty to these crimes?"
  3. The Accused registers their plea verbally.
    • If the plea is "Guilty" skip to verdict section on "Guilty".
    • If the plea is "Not Guilty" continue to work through the steps.
  4. The Throne then states "You have claimed to be free of Guilt. In accordance you are free to choose your method of Trial: Law, Ordeal or Combat."
  5. The Accursed then registers their desired type of trial verbally. Please proceed to the designated section for the Trial.

Trial

  • by Law
    1. The Accuser is commanded by the throne to give their version of the story.
    2. The Accused is commanded by the throne to give their version of the story.
    3. The Accuser is permitted to present evidence that proves their version of the story or disproves the Accused.
    4. The Accused is permitted to present evidence that proves their version of the story or disproves the Accuser.
    5. The Throne reviews evidence, questions individuals, and otherwise investigates the claim before rendering a verdict of "Guilty" or "Not Guilty".
  • by Ordeal
    1. The Throne assigned the Accused a task. This task is to be difficult to the point of being considered impossible without the support of God.
    2. The Accused attempts the task:
      • If the accused succeeds at the task they are declared "Not Guilty"
      • If the accused fails at the task they are declared "Guilty"
  • by Combat
    1. The Throne declares if the combat shall be to first blood or death.
    2. The Accuser declares to fight for themselves, or assigns a Champion (the Champion must agree).
    3. The Accused declares to fight for themselves, or assigns a Champion (the Champion must agree).
    4. The pair fight to first blood or death as decreed by the Throne.
      • If the Accuser or the Accuser's Champion wins the Accused is declared "Guilty".
      • If the Accused os the Accused's Champion wins the Accused is declared "Not Guilty"

Verdict

  • If the verdict is "Guilty"
    1. The Throne declares "<NAME> has been proven by the grace of God through <TRIAL TYPE> to be Guilty of <CRIME>."
    2. The Throne then assigns a punishment appropriate for the crime(s) committed.
  • If the verdict is "Innocent"
    1. The Throne declares "<NAME> has been cleared of all wrongdoing and proven themselves by <TRIAL TYPE> before the eyes of the Throne of Camelot and God."
    2. (Optional) If the Throne deems it necessary to the situation, they may assign a recompense for false accusation to be paid by the Accuser of the Innocent.
