Navati peered anxiously through the fence enclosing the yard of 204 S. Second Avenue - a house where no cat lived, at least not to her knowledge - and hoped that no-cat could see in like she could see out. The she-cat's nerves twanged, already frayed to the breaking point since her humiliating ordeal at Court just minutes earlier.

Her pelt flushed with searing embarrassment as she remember how her liege and King, Pendragon, had scorned her in front of all the Court, had dismissed her as a mere "peasant". The ache of shame settled deep within her chest, and all Navati really wanted to do was slink back home and seek refuge within her housefolk's caresses.

But then she'd never know what the mysterious tailless Drusilla knew about Zane. Navati was desperate for news of her wayward sibling. Enough so that she was willing to seek out an obvious uncouth ruffian savage from the woods.

Let us hold the die uncast
Maelstrom had gone with Navati. She might not have been in training anymore, but she was still very big and could try to help her friend if those foreign cats tried anything. Not that doing anything so close to Pendragon would be smart, she thought and stood tall regardless, hoping to calm some of Navati's nerves.

"I don't think anyone's followed us," Maelstrom whispered to her.

Love comes from the heart
Drusilla had followed the black and white cat's instructions to this specific twoleg home, and awaited her arrival. She sat in the backyard, having left the court meeting rather quickly to avoid further conflict. Flicking her stubby tail in anticipation, she awaited the she-cat's arrival. Zane's sister may have questions, but Drusilla herself needed information too. Hoefully this meeting would be beneficial to both parties.
But so does hate

Navati swallowed, then took a deep, steadying breath. After attempting to exhale all her worry and shame away, -- and indeed, she did feel better, a bit -- the housecat turned to face her friend and nodded decisively.

"Right, then. This . . . . Drusilla . . . should be in the backyard." She began walking, doing her best to maintain a dignified air that betrayed nothing of the emotions swirling beneath. But as she padded across clipped grass, Navati at last glanced up toward her friend, and didn't even try to disguise the rueful relief, gratitude, and security she felt from the large longhair's company.

"I'm more glad than I can say to have you by my side," she murmured aside. "I just hope . . . you won't think too badly of me when . . ." She cut herself off, her face tightening. Perhaps this had been a mistake. Would Maelstrom abandon her when she learned that General Zane, a tomcat living wild in the forest, was Navati's beloved littermate?
