Blackcough
 
Complaint: Blackcough
 
Human Equivalent: Pneumonia
 
Description: Blackcough is a severe lung infection that is difficult to treat in the best of cases and frequently fatal. It sits in the lungs of the cat and interferes with breathing, sometimes to the point of death. Many cats who do manage to survive never fully recover the vitality they once had.

Symptoms include wet coughing, high fever, loss of appetite and/or difficulty breathing (characterized by blue or gray tongue, gums and lips).
 
Duration: Mild: 1 moon of intense treatment, followed by approximately 2 of follow-up treatments.
Moderate: 2 moons of intense treatment, followed by approximately 4 of follow-up treatments.
Severe: Cases that drift into their 3rd moon are generally not survivable.
 
Treatment: Mild:
  • Loss of Appetite should be ignored, and the patient should be kept well watered and fed as much possible.
  • Fever should be treated with appropriate herbs.
  • Coughs should not be prevented. The more the patient brings up from the lungs the better for them. They should be encouraged to place anything they cough up on a grape leaf for easy disposal.
  • The difficulty breathing should be treated as best as possible, with those herbs that will ease breathing without preventing the cough. The patient should also be encouraged to rest as much as possible.
Moderate: Treatments should be stepped up the more severe the case is. Should coughing get bad enough to cause pain, those pains should be treated.
Severe: In most severe cases things are generally fairly hopeless. Treatment should continues in the hope that the illness might be defeated. Treatment should include working to keep the patient comfortable while attempting to cure the Blackcough.
 
Residual Effects: Mild: 1 moon of higher than normal susceptibility to other respiratory ailments.
Slight lung damage that results in difficulty breathing for 3-6 moons.
Moderate: 2 moons of higher than normal susceptibility to other respiratory ailments.
Moderate lung damage that results in difficulty breathing for 6-9 moons.
Severe: 3 moons of higher than normal susceptibility to other respiratory ailments.
Severe lung damage that results in difficulty breathing for 9-12 moons.
 
Possible Complications: Mild: Possibility of permanent mild lung damage.
Moderate: Possibility of permanent mild to moderate lung damage.
Severe: Possibility of permanent moderate to severe lung damage.
 
Notes: This ailment is contagious via contact with the sick cat.
This ailment has a high probability of fatality.
