Guide to Creating a Character

From Children of StarClan

This guide is written & maintained by Kitsufox, the admin in charge of Character Approvals, to assist players in creating better character sheets. If you are confused by any of these guidelines please contact her to discuss the point for improvement.

Before Beginning

Before you even begin to create your first character sheet, you need to familiarize yourself with the following information about CoSC.

Starting a Character

  1. Complete the suggested reading on this page.
  2. Go to the Character Creation Index and read the rules given there.
  3. Click on the link for the page that is appropriate for your type of character.
  4. Enter the name of the character into the box.
  5. Click the button that reads 'Start Character Creation'

Writing Your Character

  1. Fill out the form that pops up on the screen in accordance with the Instructions listed on the page. Failure to read the given instructions for each field will increase the likelihood that your character will be declined.
  2. Click the 'Save Page' button any time you wish to record your progress. You can return to editing by clicking the 'Edit with Form' link located under the "Actions" button at the top of the sheet. (Clicking the plain 'Edit' button will take you to the source code of the character, rather than the proper editing form).

Getting Your Character Checked

"Checks" are what CoSC calls having your character reviewed for acceptance into the game by staff. Use the following steps to send your character in to be checked. Failure to send your character in for a check will result in it not being reviewed. Unless you manually request a check through the character sheet, checks do not happen.

  1. Go to your character page.
  2. Click the "Actions" button and then select 'Edit with Form' from the drop down list.
  3. Find the 'Approvals' box at the top.
  4. Change the status from 'new' to 'submit'.
  5. Click the 'Save Page' button to record that change.

If an admin declines your sheet, they'll post the check results (with the date) to the discussion page (which you can find through the "Actions" button) and they will change the Approvals status to 'declined'. This process can be repeated as many times as needed for you and the Admin doing the checks to succeed in building a character you like and fits into the world perfectly.

Got Declined? What To Do About It

CoSC has very high standards, particularly compared to other games in this fandom. Due to this most character sheets are declined at least once (Typically 2-4 declines happen to a character. For some more complicated concepts 5 or more declines have been required) on the road to get approved. Here is the basic process to use to improve your character for the next check.

  1. Review the most recent Check Results on the Discussion (sometimes called "talk") page located under the "Actions" button.
  2. Take the following actions:
    • Make the changes recommended by the check results
    • Seek approvals and permissions from characters effected by your character sheet
    • Consider (and possible edit in relation to) any points for consideration recommended
    • Discuss any points you're not sure on or don't agree with the rational of with the Admin who declined the sheet.
    • Follow any other specific instructions given (such as recommended reading).
  3. Request another check.

Getting Approved

When the administration finds your character appropriate the character will be go through the following process. Please note that you receive no notification other than these changes to your character sheet.

  1. The Approvals Status of the sheet will be changed from 'submit' to 'approved' by the approving administrator.
  2. A Short Description will be added by the approving administrator. Remember to double check that this is correct. If it needs to be changed, request that change before you start role playing.
  3. A {{History Names}} template will be added if the approving administrator thinks it is needed. Don't worry about this, Project Information Drive will attend to it in due time.
  4. On your userpage the character's name will move from the "Pending Character" list to the "Character" list automatically.

Once these changes are made by an Administrator, you are free to begin role playing.
