Long Description :
Time and trial have worn Shardclaw down from the fresh young warrior he once was; though he is still trim and of thin build, his steps are heavier for the losses he has seen. His coat is white as river-froth and beginning to thin in some places, though the dramatically-contrasting patches of black which cover his ears are undiminished, as is the dark tip of his tail. His solemn eyes are the flat, cool gray of a midwinter sky.

Personality
Shardclaw, having lost so many cats close to him during his lifetime, has little left to cling to but the Code and the Clan; these he has desperately thrown himself into with every ounce of fervor he can summon from his weary soul. He has always prided himself on loyalty, but now he nears fanaticism in his dedication to ThunderClan and the Warrior Code -- they are two things which he knows cannot leave him.
Shardclaw bears the company of his clanmates with less sharp-tonguedness than he once did, for in those days he always had Cloverleaf or, less often, his brother for company. But now that he is alone, Shardclaw has found he is unsuited to complete solitude, and he has begun to feel rather lonely. While he is not entirely withdrawn, he is less quick now to voice his opinions than he was a year ago, and his temper has been dulled by the mellowing of time, thus making him a generally more tolerable cat. Of course, he misses the ones he has lost -- his mother, his brother, Cloverleaf -- but he is a sensible cat and recognizes the reality of his situation. Pining away will do his Clan no good. |

Shardclaw was born Icekit to the ThunderClan queen Finchfeather, one half of a litter of two. He and his brother, Blackkit, soon grew into a couple of young hooligans, engaging in every standard kit game and going beyond that to invent their own. The two tomkits were very close during the first moons of their lives. The brothers' bond began to change, however, around the time of their apprenticeship.
Icekit was named Icepaw, and Blackkit Nightpaw; both began their training with the same enthusiasm they'd put into kithood romps. It soon became apparent, however, that they were on divergent paths. Nightpaw retained his roguish nature and habitually tried his mentor's patience, but Icepaw, tasting the true application of the Warrior Code for the first time, relished his chance to prove himself an able member of his Clan. It was at this point that Nightpaw's continued joking and slacking began to rankle Icepaw, who wanted his brother to follow his pawsteps as he had through kithood. Icepaw rebuked Nightpaw on several occasions for putting off duties, and their relationship frayed. The brothers were ten moons old when their mother died. Finchfeather had often in recent times been a mediator between the two, and both toms loved their mother dearly; so it was that, when she was struck and killed on the Thunderpath while patrolling with Nightpaw, Icepaw's bond with his brother shattered irreparably. Icepaw blamed Nightpaw (perhaps irrationally) for not preventing their mother's death; Nightpaw was distraught and guilt-ridden, but Icepaw turned away from him, and they finished their apprenticeships with a gulf of bad feeling between them. Icepaw's zeal for serving his Clan paid off; he was given his warrior name, Shardclaw, in a ceremony solely dedicated to him. Nightpaw's antics had caused their leader to delay his warrior ceremony for another half moon, and though Nightpaw subsequently worked his tail off to regain favor, Shardclaw scorned his brother for what seemed to him a terrible disgrace. When Nightpaw at last was named Nightfall, Shardclaw was almost ready to start afresh in his relationship with his brother, for now at last they were on equal footing again. It was at this point that Cloverleaf began to play an important role in their lives. She was Cloverpaw at the time, a friend of Nightfall who was a few moons younger. Shardclaw paid little attention to her until the day Nightfall and the rest of his patrol dragged her bloody, mangled body back into camp. From then on, Shardclaw took an unconscious notice of her (and of Nightfall's growing interest in her) as she healed and took her warrior name. Shardclaw's relationship with his brother, now disrupted by Cloverleaf and the amount of time Nightfall was spending with her, became as volatile as it had been in their apprentice days. Disgruntled and seeking a friend, Shardclaw found himself for reasons he could not name turning to Cloverleaf for company. Her timidity and troubled nature drew out a protective instinct in Shardclaw, and as he became closer to her, he found himself in competition with Nightfall for Cloverleaf's time...and affections. Shardclaw realized quickly enough that there was some secret which weighed upon Cloverleaf, and that it was a secret in which his brother shared. This bothered Shardclaw, for he thought of himself as just as much a friend to Cloverleaf as Nightfall. Still, he did not confront Cloverleaf, for she was delicate and he feared losing the relationship they had built. Only after he loudly stood up for her to Bloodstar did Cloverleaf decide to confide in him, and once he knew her secret, Shardclaw was only driven to further protective lengths for Cloverleaf. There was not time for friendship with Cloverleaf to go further, for either Nightfall or Shardclaw. Somehow, in some cruel contrivance of fate or StarClan or Bloodstar, Cloverleaf was chosen to be a member of a planned ambush on a ShadowClan patrol. Shardclaw was powerless to disobey his leader's strict orders, and so he watched Cloverleaf leave camp with the patrol with a feeling of desperate terror gnawing at his belly. He knew, even before the patrol returned, that nothing good could come of this, and when the patrol did return, Shardclaw realized what the absence of two of its members meant: Cloverleaf's crippling terror had overcome her and lost ThunderClan a warrior, leaving her nothing to do but flee. As much as he understood her reasons, Shardclaw took the loss of Cloverleaf hard, as well as the implications which he felt descending on him as the Clan denounced Cloverleaf as a traitor -- he was the traitor's friend, he might have been the traitor's mate. As for Nightfall...the other tom was as broken as Shardclaw, and they were too different to find solace in each other's company. So Shardclaw drove himself hard to serve the Clan, and Nightfall veered off into reckless abandon, and they successfully stayed away from one another for several moons. When Nightfall died, dragged down by a fox while out hunting alone, Shardclaw felt a vague guilt -- he should have looked after his brother, shouldn't he? -- but nothing more, nothing comparable to the loss of Cloverleaf. Still, Nightfall was kin, and now Shardclaw has no family left, and no close friends. He has begun to realize that he simply cannot be so aloof as he would like, in principle, to be...And so he is left now, uncertain as a shy kit, beginning to pick up the pieces of his life and look for a new friend or two. Shardclaw was slain on the 10th day of the Moon of Turning Leaves (2008) by the fox while out hunting with Flamedust, who died that same day. |
