1.) | Use existing PC (Whirlkit (Icystone)). When I initially began to think out Whirlkit’s character sheet, write it, finalize it, and then go on to develop her even further in role play—something I haven’t done as often as I have some of my other characters due to the fact that she’s still fairly young—I thought she’d grow up to be a regular warrior; she’d enjoy the hunting and fighting and the challenge of it, and enjoy learning the warrior code. However, when the RiverClan medicine cat application was opened, I began to rethink this. Granted, Whirlkit would be a fine warrior, in her opinion; after her warrior ceremony she’d go about her normal life and feel fulfilled. And she has not shown exemplary patience or wisdom or any traits that can be useful for medicine cats to have. This, however, odd as it may sound, is part of the reason I felt she’d do best as a medicine cat apprentice: she’d have to grow and develop and temper her personality and actions even more than if she’d taken the warrior’s path. Of course, I’m not saying that if she became a warrior apprentice she’d have a completely easy time of it, but I think her current personality would fit well with the fighting and hunting way of life. I enjoy playing Whirlkit, and despite her young age, I feel that her developing personality is very interesting for me to role play, and I’d enjoy developing her as a medicine cat. Despite her impatience, she has a willingness to learn, as shown in Hear That, Columbus? (28RP), where she displays and interest in learning more about the camp and becoming an apprentice. In [1], Whirlkit shows an interest in becoming a medicine cat and learning about herbs. Becoming a medicine cat apprentice would, in my opinion, help to develop these skills. Her want to learn more and desire to be better and to explore would temper her currently rather sharp personality and serve her as she learns about herbs, illnesses, and everything about the medicine cat’s way of life. | ||

2.) | She looked up at her mentor as the medicine cat laid out the leaves in front of her. Basil, dandelion, and raspberry. And which of them would treat Blackcough? Blackcough caused fevers and coughs, of course—hence the name. Perhaps this was how a warrior felt as they stalked and trapped a piece of prey. Eliminating scents that were only there to distract—like the basil, which would be of no practical use to a cat with Blackcough. That one was obvious. The raspberry helped with coughs…but coughs were helpful to a cat ill with Blackcough; it helped to get out all the bad stuff inside the cat. And dandelion…for fevers. Yes. That would be the best answer. Whirlpaw slid her paw forward until it was almost touching the dandelion leaves. “Dandelion,” she said in a careless voice, because although she was proud of herself for figuring it out (of course), it was still a fairly easy question. | ||
3.) | Her ears pricked at the sound of a voice calling for Heronflight—Robintail’s voice, no less, and it was very weak. She stopped at once what she was doing—sorting leaves; a monotonous task but one that she realized was important; rather comparable to a boring, eventless border patrol, Whirlpaw thought. She slipped outside, her mouth empty of herbs—she wouldn’t get any until she knew what the problem was. She might not even need any at all—there was a very, very small chance that Robintail had come to Heronflight’s den for something other than diagnosis or herbs, but given how his voice had sounded, this was highly unlikely. She looked over the warrior, her eyes scanning him as soon as she came within sight of him. He had collapsed, and Whirlpaw went quickly over to him. Even a dumb mouse would be able to tell there was something wrong with his leg. His right foreleg was torn open to the bone, where a single break was visible. Although she had never seen one of the things, Whirlpaw knew that it was the Silver Jaws—it could have been worse, given it being those horrible traps. Robintail’s leg was still attached to his body, after all. He’d still be laid up for a good while, though. But that was in the future, this was now and what she’d have to do to make sure that the break healed properly. She would have to check to see if the bone was properly aligned, and then, if it wasn’t, set it—and give him a dose of poppy seeds, just enough to dull the pain of setting the break. | ||
4.) | It wasn’t such a bad life, being a medicine cat apprentice. She got to learn about herbs and healing—true, it wasn’t the same as clawing a ThunderClan warrior, but in a sense it was even more important than that—in Whirlpaw’s eyes, anyway. After all, the overwhelming majority of apprentices were taught to hunt and fight, to memorize the enemies’ weak points and target those, to protect those places on one’s own body. She’d heard all about it, even if she didn’t know where the places were. But that wasn’t the point. The point was that she knew things that the other apprentices didn’t; that she could do far more than them, with only their basic training in medicine. Sure, they could all defend the Clan and provide food for everyone and whatnot, but when they got injured doing just that it would be her they’d have to turn to. But despite all this, she shouldn’t get a swelled head. Even if she knew her importance, it was no use flaunting it openly. She’d never misuse her knowledge to hurt her Clanmates—annoying though some of them were—but that didn’t guarantee her sitting quietly and handing out herbs like a good little medicine cat apprentice. Oh, she’d attend the lessons and do her duty to counsel and heal—but since there weren’t any sick cats at the moment, she might as well do something. Like—talk to the other apprentices, the warrior apprentices, see how they felt about their training and their mentors. How was she to serve her Clanmates if she didn’t know them? It would be a nice challenge for herself—getting past all those annoying or shallow fronts some cats put up and actually learning to tolerate them—how was she supposed to heal a cat she hated? And here was as good a place as any to get in the center of action. She planted herself right next to the fresh-kill pile—a good place to talk to hungry or hunting warriors—and turned her back to the prey and her front to the rest of the camp. | ||
5.) | A—as an existing member of the staff, I feel that I’ve been completing my responsibilities—although I haven’t been a staff member for very long—and I intend to continue to do so. I’m pretty active, and I try to have good, insightful posts, despite some days where my muse is off to who knows where ;). I look forward to developing as a better role player, writer, staff member, and member of CoSC in general. I know that I haven’t had much experience as a staff member, but I hope and intend to only improve as one of the staff as I’ve done as a regular member ever since my first try at writing my first character sheet. I’m only human, so I know I’ll make mistakes, but as time goes on those mistakes will become less in number and smaller as I gain more experience. |

1.) | Existing PC Kit-Pebblekit Pebblekit’s personality makes him perfect for the medicine cat’s den. Unlike his sister Whirlkit’s anxiety to leave the camp and become an apprentice, Pebblekit is just fine where he is at the moment Hear That, Columbus? (28RP) ((6th post down)). It shows that he can handle being in the medicine cat’s den for an extended period of time if he needs to be due to a disease outbreak. It also shows that he has patience, a trait that would be useful in a time of illness because it is required to not rush and possibly risk making a mistake when taking care of a patient. Pebblekit is used to quietly taking orders instead of showing rebellionThe Stork is on the Way! (16 RP) ((15th post down)) This is important for being a medicine cat apprentice, because it will enable him to learn all that he can learn while he is an apprentice. He also likes to learn by observing things around him Hear That, Columbus? (28RP) ((6th post down)) which will be useful when watching patients as they first come in. He does have interest in the position Hear That, Columbus? (28RP) ((15th post down)) and interest is the driving force behind his desire to become a medicine cat apprentice and is what will keep him on the medicine cat path. Pebblekit’s patience, quiet obedience, observational learning, and interest in the position would hopefully help him become a suitable medicine cat in the future when he is done with his training. | ||

2.) | It took Pebblepaw only moments, or so he thought, to come up with what he believed was the correct answer to Heronflight’s inquiry. The basil leaves and raspberry leaves were used in pregnancy, if he remembered right. dandelion on the other hand was used to comfort a cat with a fever. So that was exactly what he said. “Dandelion, because the leaves can help sick and feverish cats sleep.” The young tom concluded. | ||
3.) | Pebblepaw heard the voice of a warrior, Robintail, in the entrance of the den, calling out for help. “I’ll be there in a couple of seconds.”He grabbed some poppy seeds, just in case the tom was in pain. “Now, lets take a look. Eat these first.” He put the poppy seeds in front of the patient, hoping that the collapsed tom would be able to eat them. If not, Pebblepaw would be able to help him do the task. The tom’s right foreleg was bleeding. And it was hanging at an odd angle. The thought that came to Pebblepaw’s mind was that it was the work of the silver jaws. Heronflight was out, so Pebblepaw would have to provide urgent care. “Now, I am going to prepare a few herbs for healing and do some immediate care until Heronflight gets back and can properly look at you, if you will let me. I believe your bone is broken, because it is hanging at an odd angle. Please stay still so that I can help you.” Pebblepaw mewed to his patient. He trotted to the store of plants, keeping a close eye on the injured warrior. First was to work on the cut. He prepared the potluces of daisy flowers, comfry roots, and broom berries to help with the broken bone. He then brought out cobwebs, and made a potluce of alder and chervil leaves to avoid infection with the cut. He knew what he would do with the injury, if Robintail did not move while he was trying to fix it. He would first put the cut-healing mixtures on the cut itself, before putting cobwebs on it to stop the bleeding. Then he would properly align the bone, and apply the bone healing mixtures to the leg. He hoped that everything would turn out well for poor Robintail. | ||
4.) | A pleasant green-leaf day greeted Pebblepaw as he awoke from his slumber. The gray son of Sleekstar arose, and tasted the air of the medicine cat’s den. He loved the smell of the den, the various herbs each had their own distinct smell and they all harmonized to make, in his opinion, a very lovely scent. Everything was falling into place. He would be the next medicine cat of RiverClan soon, and he was learning all he could about the medicine cat position. For now, the tom was pleased with everyday life. Sure, he was anxious about what his medicine cat name would be, and he wondered how great (or so he hoped) of a medicine cat he would be. Those thoughts could wait until later. Right now, he wanted to enjoy the lovely day by basking in the sun outside of the medicine cat’s den. This moment was perfection to him, and he would not live it any other way. | ||
5.) | I feel like I’m qualified for the staff because I have been consistently active on the boards ever since I joined CoSC. I also provide experience as a member, I am coming up on my three year anniversary and I survived the move over from the old site. I have helped out in some information drives, with creating a few rhyming poems for medicine cat omens. I believe that my commitment and service to the site are what qualify me for a staff position. I bring to the table a bright mind, with the ability to brainstorm through any trouble situation that comes along to the site. I am also bringing a desire to serve in a staff position, and a commitment to activity to the site. I will give the staff position one hundred and ten percent of my internet availability, and I am eager to help out in any way, shape, or form. In addition, I finally figured out the format so that my applications look proper!

Accepted Application from Miss Mouse

1.) | Existing PC Character - Whirlkit I believe Whirlkit would make a good -- or, at least, interesting -- choice for Heronflight's apprentice largely due to her persistent, energetic nature. As Heronflight herself proves, the wise-and-serene medicine cat stereotype is a thing of the past. Whirlkit enjoys learning, learning anything, and if a task is presented in the manner of a challenge, she sets her teeth into it and will see it through to the bitter end. In the seventeenth post of this thread, Whirlkit demonstrates a high level of interest in the prospect of uncovering the mysteries of medicine cattery; in the fourteenth post of this thread, she expresses the idea of pursuing the post of medicine cat, and even though at the time she spoke thus "more for the sake of being contrary", the concept intrigues her, and she would most definitely relish the challenge of learning the myriad of medicinal herbs and treatments. Finally, I believe Whirlkit would be a good match for Heronflight due to her energy and resulting capability to roll with the punches rather than limp off and sulk. Though Heronflight, from her description, can be somewhat difficult to get along, Whirlkit would regard her mentor's sour conduct as an obstacle to be overcome. (I apologize that there is so little RP material to offer as evidence; Whirlkit is young, and her previous player did not have the opportunity to involve her in many threads.) | ||
---|---|---|---|
2.) | The moment Heronflight spoke, Whirlpaw's attention was fixated on the herbs; the subtle provocation in her mentor's voice had brought Whirlpaw's competitiveness to the forefront. She would get this right. Blackcough, blackcough, blackcough... It took a moment of observation before she recognized them -- "Basil, dandelion, raspberry," she whispered to herself, a concentrated furrow showing between her eyes as she drew their purposes to her mind. Basil helps snake bite and stuck kits. But the other two... "You could use dandelion or raspberry leaves," she concluded, her eyes gleaming at having overcome this hidden trick. "Raspberry might break a fever, as a cat with blackcough would have, and dandelion brings sleep to the fevered." | ||
3.) | Whirlpaw's pulse picked up as she stared down at Robintail, with his mangled leg and his obvious drained state. She couldn't help but feel a tingle of excitement, mingled with nerves; this was big, and it was up to her, at least until Heronflight got back. Where to start, though... Pain and bleeding first, she decided. There was nothing she could do alone for the obviously-shattered bone of his leg. She would get Robintail settled down and then treat the lacerations of the skin. Whirlpaw went darting off into the storage area, quickly filling a large dock leaf with the necessary items. She chose willow bark over poppy seeds for pain because she didn't know whether Heronflight might need Robintail awake to answer questions. She brought yarrow to apply to the open wounds to guard against infection, as well as a pile of mouse fluff to staunch the flow of blood. More than that, she did not bring; Heronflight might wish to examine the break more thoroughly before setting it, and though Whirlpaw hated to admit it, she was not entirely certain in the treatment of such an injury. "Here," she said through her mouthful of dock leaf as she returned to Robintail's side. She set down the leaf and picked the willow bark from it, setting the herb down beside Robintail's muzzle. "Chew this. It will ease your pain." She went about cleaning his leg wound, careful not to probe too deeply before the willow could take effect. When the tears in his skin were cleaned and poulticed, she sat back, looking down at the warrior with satisfaction. She felt she'd done as good a job as she could do. Now, to wait for Heronflight... | ||
4.) | Whirlpaw stepped out of the medicine den with irritation bristling in her tail and whiskers; they were out of marigold again. At least it wouldn't be hard to find the herb, not in the midst of such a proliferous greenleaf season. Still, Whirlpaw didn't like to leave camp alone, having grown up to tales of the Killer -- a creature not even she would dare take on -- and so she stopped by the fresh-kill pile, looking around for a cat who might make a good herb-hunting companion. There must be someone... | ||
5.) | I believe I would make a good addition to the CoSC staff team because I am a highly active member of the site, I pay close attention to detail, and I very much enjoy creating and telling stories, traits which all in all add up to a productive staff member. While I realize I am not the most veteran player on the site -- not at all -- I feel I contribute and would in future contribute enough to CoSC to make up for my juniority.
