Application Questions

1.) Role Play Situation
A small brown tabby she-cat sat just outside of her den. Sunlight warmed her back and the simple pureness of the day made Sagepelt's amber eyes shine. The sun had recently pass the sun-high mark and few clouds littered the sky. Sagepelt's drifting eyes finally moved towards the apprentice in front of her. The dark pair of amber eyes studied the apprentice and then Sagepelt slowly began to question the younger cat. "Tell me," she said, deciding to test what knowledge this cat possessed, "what would you do for a cat with a toothache?" This was a practical question, one she had reviewed with her apprentice many times before. If the cat was listening while Sagepelt had been teaching about the ways herbs could be used, the answer should come easy enough.

2.) Role Play Situation
"Sagepelt?" Brairclaw called in his gravely voice as he poked his head into the den. Sagepelt had recently left to collect marigold and juniper to replenish the lowered supplies. The elder pushed his way through the den now, his black and white body was thin and his short fur had begun to thin over his long years of life. Even though the tomcat was old, his bright green eyes still shone with the life of a younger cat's. "I've been having a nasty cough for the past few days, and I'm not sure if it's anything serious. But I just wanted to make sure," he said, looking slightly nervous. Greencough had raged through ShadowClan before, and the thought of it raging through the camp again was to Brairclaw, horrifying. He glanced around, hoping that Sagepelt would reveal herself sometime soon.

3.) Role Play Situation
Assume Sagepelt is out of camp for this situation.
Robintail limped slowly into camp, his right foreleg dripping blood, and hanging at a strange angle. He whimpered slightly with each step, moving slowly towards the Medicine Cat's Den. "Sagepelt?" His voice was weak, and he was clearly exhausted from the long journey. So exhausted that he collapsed as his three good legs gave out. When examined, it would be revealed that, in addition to the flesh around his paw being torn in an circle all the way around and scraped and cut in many places, one of the two long legbones had been broken. An experienced Medicine Cat would know it instantly: The work of one of the human's Silver Jaws, deadly things they left to hunt for them, that grabbed in the limbs of animals not careful enough. Robintail was a rare case where one managed to wrestle their leg free and flee from the cold creature without tearing it off completely.

4.) Essay Question
Why do you feel that you, the player, is qualified to join the CoSC Staff? Include information about what you feel you would bring to the staff.

5.) Essay Question
Describe what you have in mind for the future development of this character.

New Application from Web

Application Status: New
1.) Ravenpaw flicked his black tail, the patience Sagepelt had taught him to have overpowering his urge to know what his mentor was going to ask him. His bright eyes shone with wakefulness and attentiveness. Little white claws unsheathed and sheathed a couple times as Sagepelt's gaze wandered. He felt confident about this. He knew he'd answer the question correctly.

He eyed the she-cat with eagerness--not a kit-like eagerness, that is, more of a knowledge-seeking eagerness. And then it came. The question. His eyes brimming with readiness, he took several deep breaths. He had to answer this perfectly. Ravenpaw usually strived to be fairly perfect, of course, but these little quizzes made him want to be even more perfect. So--first step: review the question.

Tell me, what would you do for a cat with a toothache? As his mind echoed Sagepelt's words, Ravenpaw had to stop himself from mrrowing with amusement. This was easy. Way easy. Drawing himself up, the medicine cat apprentice mewed confidently, "Why, I would ask the patient to chew alder leaves, of course." Possessing a good memory and a head for herbs, uncertainty was the farthest thing from his mind at the moment as he faced his small tabby mentor expectantly, waiting for her to praise him.

There was no question about it. He was right. Medicine cats had to be right. If they weren't right, where would the Clans be?
2.) As he busied himself sorting herbs, Ravenpaw wasn't sure if he should panic or scoff at Brairclaw's words. He knew that the concept of any kind of coughing was scary, but the medicine cats' herbs might all be wasted on cats with just a little cough. When you get right down to it, thought the white-chested tom, a little cough is merely a little cough. But he's still a ShadowClan cat, and I'm still one of his medicine cats, so he should be offered something, now shouldn't he?

His mind all made up, Ravenpaw shot up to Brairclaw, jet-black tail waving confidently in the air, and sat down in front of the black-and-white elder, eyes narrowed. "Sagepelt went to collect herbs," he said, his voice carrying a slight edge to it, "but I can offer you something." He turned around and surveyed the herb store. He ran his eyes over most of the plants, calculating what the ones he knew about did and were used for.

Quickly making his decision, he grabbed a couple of the bright yellow tansy flowers from their storage area and dropped them at Brairclaw's paws. Ravenpaw brought his gaze up until he looked Brairclaw right in the eye. "Eat," he snapped. "It'll do you good."
3.) "What?" chirped Ravenpaw as he padded out of the den, having heard the strained voice ask for Sagepelt. "Sagepelt's not here now, but--" his words were cut off as he spotted Robintail. It looked bad. He bounded over, an unusual sense of fear pulsing through his veins. "Uh," he began, thinking aloud, "it's..." Being only an apprentice, Ravenpaw could not instantly recognize the wound. "...the work of one of those Twoleg things, I think." Shaking himself, he crouched down and began to examine the warrior's wound. He gasped as he realized that one of Robintail's leg bones was broken in addition to the torn flesh and many cuts around his paw.

Great timing, he thought. I'm all alone, and Robintail's wounded badly. He rushed to the den and quickly scanned the herbs. Yarrow, he wanted yarrow, where was yarrow? Ah, there it was. Grabbing some flowers in his fangs, he ran back to Robintail and quickly started to chew the yarrow flowers, being careful not to swallow them in case they made him vomit.

When the yarrow flowers were chewed to his satisfaction, he spat them out and gingerly placed them on the area surrounding the older cat's paw. "Okay," he muttered, hoping that Robintail wasn't too exhausted to hear him, "that'll relieve the pain and prevent infection, so for now just stay there and rest, and Sagepelt will be here soon to take care of it." He carefully jumped around mentioning Robintail's broken bone in case the warrior didn't already know and panicked. This was chaotic enough without some cat panicking.
4.) I feel that I am qualified to join the CoSC staff because I have time and muse for CoSC. I might not post a billion times every week, but I think that I am active and I try to post several times a week, though I will admit that lately I haven't been the best example of high activity. Also, I've had experience with being a staff member on other websites, and though I know CoSC is very unique, there are certain similarities in responsibility and such for the staff team. I realize that I already have a character with "Raven-" as the beginning name part, and that this may be a problem (I don't quite know how, but I get the feeling that it might be one). However, I can probably find a way to deal with it somehow or other.
5.) If I am given Ravenpaw, he will gradually develop into a more mature version of what he is now. His practical, sometimes even cold and venomous attitude will stay with him, as well as his good memory. However, his opinions about visions and StarClan in general will change as he ages and learns. When he receives visions, he will report them to the leader immediately unless it is clear--or decided upon--that it should not be shared so soon. His somewhat lacking and blurred knowledge of StarClan will become a firm belief in the fact that StarClan do a lot, but not everything--basically, Ravenpaw's realistic sense mixed in with his spiritual sense.

New Application from Willow

Application Status: New
1.) Ravenpaw sat still as Sagepelt's gaze wandered. He already knew what the day looked like; he had given it all the attention it deserved in the early morning, soon after leaving the Apprentices' Den. His tail tip tapped the ground on a slow rhythm, keeping in time with the bi-color's breathing. Sagepelt could take all the time she wanted; in his head, Ravenpaw was reviewing and analyzing herbs for future reference. He didn't feel he would need the revision for his mentor's quiz, but it never hurt to be sure.

When Sagepelt's first question finally came, it was almost too easy. Tootache? He was eight moons old! This was a question fit for a week-old apprentice.

Ravenpaw repressed a frustrated inner sigh - the question didn't allow him to reach his full potential, and had been asked too many times already. His muzzle didn't show any signs of annoyance, though, and when the medicine cat apprentice replied, it was with a confident, self-assured tone - if a tad flat.

"Chewing alder leaves helps removing the pain. If there is swelling, yarrow leaves are good to reduce it and prevent infection."

His tail tip tapped the ground on a slightly faster rhythm for a few moments, before settling again. He liked being questioned and proving his knowledge. Hopefully, Sagepelt's questions would become more complex as they moved on.

2.) "Brairclaw." Ravenpaw didn't bother with a more complex greeting. "Sagepelt isn't here," he clarified, slowly rising from his sunny spot at the den's entrance. Without further explanations, he approached the older tom, giving him an overall look. Brairclaw's eyes were as bright as ever; no fever glassiness covered them. Probably nothing serious, but with the memory of the recent Greencough plague still fresh on Ravenpaw's mind, he didn't want to chance any risks.

"Cough, let me hear the sound of it." It would help him detect any signs of phlegm or blockages in Brairclaw's breathing. "Other than the cough, do you feel ill in any way?" As Ravenpaw evaluated his own questions, he was already pondering the possibilities of the elder's reply, diagnosis and respective treatment.

3.) The young tom had been dozing off inside the Medicine Cat's den when he heard a call from outside. During the past moons, his ears had finely tuned to any calls for help for Sagepelt; she might not always be available. Since it was the case, Ravenpaw clambered to his paws, wondering what was going on. That was Robintail's mew, and so weak--

Good StarClan. The moment he took a breath, the stench of blood filled his nostrils. Without thinking twice, Ravenpaw snatched a wad of cobwebs from Sagepelt's stash with his teeth and left the den. His speed was uncharacteristic of him; in the face of need, the apprentice's languorous movements became decided and purposeful.

Circling Robintail until he could reach the injured limb, the black tom pressed his cobweb bundle against the flow of blood. He needed to clean the wound and staunch the blood flow. From what he could see of the injury, there might be a broken bone, but that could wait. Blood was more important than bone.

"Hold still, Robintail." Training and his natural composure helped Ravenpaw keep an even tone in a stressing situation. "I'm going to stop the blood flow; you're going to be fine."

Without Sagepelt around, he had to be in control of the situation. Robintail was counting on him. Glancing around, Ravenpaw's black eyes searched for an available clanmate. He would need specific herbs from the medicine cat's den, and couldn't leave Robintail's side at the moment.

4.) Do I really have to reply to this? Overall grunt work performer at your service and genotyper extraordinaire. Add whatever else is needed on the fly.

5.) Ravenpaw's personality, as envisioned by his former player, is of a brazen, self-centered character. I'd keep going on that; Ravenpaw feels he is important and highly valuable in the clan and forest, and will not balk to prove it.

He will grow to be a competent medicine cat, if rather overconfident on his own abilities. Regarding the clan, he'll develop a sense of protectiveness over his clanmates, not so much out of affection, but rather out of a determined, stubborn attitude to prove his skills in keeping the clan healthy (both physically and religiously).

Concerning other clans, his early life dealt with times of peace, but he is leery of ThunderClan. The constant tension between Whitestar and Bloodstar, and the recent battle between the clans, causes Ravenpaw to consider the dangers of the forest - death might come in from many fronts, including his own kind.

Toward StarClan, his beliefs stand firm and rooted in stone; the existence of the otherworldly cats cannot be denied, and their potential for wisdom and guidance is a source worth tapping. He has a deep respect toward his ancestors, especially due to the knowledge they might offer him.

He has self-confidence issues, but they are deeply buried - and thus come up at the worst possible times. Ravenpaw has yet to deal with those issues, and they might be an interesting theme to dwell on as he grows.
