From Children of StarClan
- Thyme, juniper, marigold... Brightsky was looking over the herbs she had laid out to dry that she had collected earlier that morning. As she finished the inventory, a ruckus outside her den caught her attention. Twitching her ears and tail in irritation at the break in her concentration, she padded from the den to come across the two bickering apprentices.
Sitting down, she listened for a moment as they traded blame and insults to each other before mewing sharply. “Greypaw! Shadowpaw! That’s enough!” Her golden eyes were stern as she shifted her eyes from one apprentice to the other and back again. “Each cat is responsible for their own actions. Put your energy to better use than fighting with each other. It's an honor to take care of the elders, even if you don't see that right now. One day, when you are elders yourselves, you will. Now, if you are to be tending the elders, then do so. I’ll get the mouse bile now so you can start on their ticks.”
Without waiting for a reply, she stood and turned, striding into her den. After searching through her supplies, she picked up a stick and speared a piece of moss on it. After soaking it in mouse bile, she carried it back out to where the apprentices were. Setting the stick down, she mewed, her voice more gentle this time. “Make sure to dab the ticks well. When you’re finished, go wash your paws in the stream. Don’t use your tongue.” Then she waited in case there were any questions.
- Brightsky laid her ear against Leafclaw’s chest, trying to hear whether or not she could hear the other she-cat’s wheezing. “I have a few herbs we can try to see if we can get that cough and something to try clearing up your nose.” She mewed to her patient. “It seems like you have a cold. I’ll be right back.”
Trotting over to her stash, she nosed around until she found some tansy flowers, feverfew leaves and thyme leaves. She proceeded to mix them together: tansy for the cough, feverfew to help fight the illness, and a little thyme to break up the mucus problems and help clear Leafclaw’s nose. She added a little heather to sweeten the mixture up for her patient before picking the pile up in her jaws.
Going over to Leafclaw, she mewed. “Here. Eat these. It should help ease your cough and help you to breath easier. I’ll bring you some for a few days, until you feel better. If you don’t seem to feel better by then, or you feel worse before then, make sure to let me know. It means I’ll have to try something else. For now, I want you to rest when you can. The more you rest, the faster you’ll get better.”
- Brightsky’s ears perked as she heard Blackstar’s call. It had been a little while since a meeting had been called. In fact, it was just recently that Hollyfeather’s kits had been introduced to the clan. She knew from both forewarning and her leader’s tone that this meeting wasn’t a bad one. The brown tabby had actually been given fair warning on the meeting.
Thornpelt was retiring. Something that Brightsky was still very apprehensive about. She knew she was ready to take on medicine cat duties or she wouldn’t have gotten her name, but she liked having Thornpelt around when she had her misgivings on something or suggesting things to her to help her out in her day-to-day tasks.
He obviously had faith in her, or he wouldn’t be retiring, and it wasn’t like he was leaving her completely. He would still be in the elder’s den for her to visit and go to for council if she needed. Brightsky sighed, thinking how lonely the medicine cat’s den would be after tonight, but she had accepted this job and loneliness was sometimes part of it. But at least she wasn’t without love or fulfillment in her life. She was a she-cat, but to her, her love was focused on her entire clan rather than a single individual and the fulfillment she got was seeing her clan grow and stay in good health due to her skills.
A shadow passed in front of the entrance to her den and caught her attention. Shaking herself out of her thoughts, she purred happily for her mentor getting his well-earned rest and respect. Running her tongue over her fur to tidy up her slightly disheveled appearance and padded from the den to join the gathered cats. Weaving gracefully in and amongst her clanmates, she took up her spot in the medicine cat’s place down below the leader’s perch and waited for the ceremony to commence
- I feel I am qualified to join the staff as medicine cat because I don’t think I have the ability to become more than just that at this time. I feel I will be able to fulfill the requirements of being a medicine cat and I am both willing and able to meet the activity requirements. The medicine cat offers me a challenge in that I must think to understand thing dreams the medicine cats are given when they go to the moonstone. When I was last a staff member, I was immature and troubled which made me a bad choice. I have straightened myself since them and would like the chance to prove this. I believe I might possibly be able to bring possible fresh ideas or opinions to the staffing group and I am often online to speak with during the day or after I get off work when I am needed and am willing to offer help when I can.
- It seemed to me that Brightsky was all sugar and sweetness. I understand that that can help make a medicine cat likable, but I also plan to add a more ‘no-nonsense’ edge to her personality that she will have gained through working with Thornpelt as a mentor. While she had confidence while her mentor was medicine cat senior, I think it might be a little fun if she was slightly underconfident in her skills initially after being Thornpelt’s retirement and eventually regains it back as she gets used to her new position. As of right now, I don’t have any ideas on future plots, but I am willing to work with the current planned plots and will hopefully develops some of my own as time goes by.
