Moot Point

From Children of StarClan

Moot Point is an off-camera scene concerning an argument between Silverdust and Dawnfire of WindClan, regarding the first's relationship with Blackstar.

In character, it took place on the 2nd day of the Moon of Cheetah's Flight (2007).
Out of character, it was written by Willow.

Moot Point

Silverdust had left the nursery a while before, but Blackstar wasn't in camp. She looked up at the muffled sound of pawsteps to see Dawnfire approaching from the medicine cat's den. About time, I guess. Sighing inwardly, the silver she-cat swallowed the bit of mouse she was chewing on.

"I wondered when you would drop by," the elder said in a dismissive tone, eying the mouse as if wondering whether she was still hungry.

Dawnfire didn't reply for a long moment. Instead, she took her time settling down next the older cat. When Silverdust shifted uneasily, the WindClan deputy purposely sat down to her clanmate's right. The elder decided to ignore her, and went back to her fresh-kill, slowing chewing each bite.

"So, you finally did it. Decided to do something for your clan?"

Just ignore her. You know she's after trouble. Silverdust played dumb, raking claws on the mouse's belly to strip flesh from bone.

"Waited until you were certain he would be leader."

Ignore her, ignore her...

"How unexpected that you would have kits now."

That did it. Silverdust knew Dawnfire was not what she might call a friend, but she was her clanmate, for StarClan's sake. Pulling her head up from the mouse, her blue eyes flashed indignation at the deputy.

"If you hold me in such contempt, why do you even bother addressing me?"

Dawnfire did not reply.

"Seriously. I know what you think of us, of me and my brother. 'Look, there they go, the malformed and the cripple.' I know you don't like me. But you're not going to get between me and Blackstar. Don't you dare." The fierceness in Silverdust's gaze and tone was at odds with her regular peaceful tone, but still Dawnfire did not budge.

"WindClan needs my kits. WindClan needs me, no matter what you say. So stop acting like you have a grudge back from when you were an apprentice. I don't care if Hawkflight had you fetching water for me, it's not my fault I couldn't move. That time is over, and we're both adults. I may not be a warrior, and you are our deputy. However, that doesn't make me any less WindClan than you are. So stop bitching, and act like the deputy you are." Just grow up, StarClan!

Dawnfire's amber eyes were stony. "My brother is WindClan leader. The clan comes before you. Don't forget that."

Behind them, Silverdust heard the sentry at the entrance of the camp mew a salute to the returning Blackstar.

"StarClan, I don't have to listen to this idiocy." The words came out half growled. Pushing herself to her paws, Silverdust picked up the partially eaten mouse with her teeth and stalked off toward Blackstar's den – as much as a lame cat can stalk.
