Physical Description: | The Bohemian Waxwing is a crested, medium-sized songbird. The majority of the cardinal's smooth, silky plumage is brown-gray except for its black face mask and the yellow and white feathers that edge its wings. Its tail has a yellow tip and its undertail is a rusty-brown color as well. Juveniles are much the same in appearance to the adults, although they have a smaller black mask, broad streaks on their underparts, and have grayer feathering overall.
Physical Statistics: | Length: 6.3 - 7.5 Inches (16 - 19 Centimeters) Weight: 1.6 - 2.4 Ounces (45 - 69 Grams) Wingspan: 13 Inches (33 Centimeters)
Behavior: | These cardinals are named 'Bohemian', as in the gypsies of Bohemia, due to the nomadic and irregular nature of their migration movements. They are opportunistic feeders, and therefore follow the food supply. Bohemian Waxwings will pluck fruit and insects from foliage during the day, and also snatch flying insects from the air. Bohemian Waxwings may be found throughout the winter in the clan lands wherever fruit and especially berries are. As they heavily rely on fresh water supply, they are also commonly seen along the River and Sidestream.
Social Organization: | The highly social Bohemian Waxwing winters in large flocks.
Approval Level*: | Moderator; These songbirds' migration patterns are unpredictable, and as such vary from year to year.
Kill Difficulty: | Low; Relatively defenseless and much smaller than a cat, Bohemian Waxwings require little effort to kill.
Hunting Difficulty: | Advanced; As with all songbirds, these cardinals can fly and have an alarm call, which will alert all nearby prey of the presence of the hunting cat.
Food Quality: | Medium; Although the Bohemian Waxwing is not large enough to satiate one cat, its meat makes a nourishing, if small, meal due to its diet of fruits and protein-rich insects.
