Accepted Application from Fae~o~the~Wind

Application Status: Accepted
1.) A.) Application as existing PC Kit or Apprentice: I am applying my character, Cedarkit (Owlfeather) of WC, who is 5 moons old as of the Moon of Long Nights (2008), for the position of WindClan Medicine Cat apprentice.

I believe his giving, big-hearted, earnest personality is ideal for one who is to dedicate his life towards healing other cats, and I know that he and Brightsky would work well together.

The following threads that are given as evidence of Cedarkit's suitability as a medicine cat appears in chronological order, not in importance.

In the "Medicine Cats' Meeting (Cheetah's Flight 2008)", Brightsky considers the newborn Cedarkit and Willowkit candidates for her future apprentice; mentoring Cedarkit thus would be not unexpected. [[1]]

When Earthstorm and Frozensky were under the weather, Cedarkit shows an inclination towards a medicine cat path, going so far as to "diagnose" his aunt with a stuffy nose, as well as the fact that he shows concern for his clanmate's well-being, and that he puts much stock in the healing power of herbs. [[2]]

Cedarkit demonstrates a practical mind geared towards the betterment of his clan: concluding he can't help remove the threat of the badger during the plot of the four predators, he instead directs his energy to more mundane tasks in camp, such as checking to see if the elder's den needs new moss. His is a helpful, wanting-to-please temperament, and he is not above doing humble, perhaps unpleasant tasks as long as he knows it will make another's day easier. [[3]]

In Ode to My Family, Cedarkit again shows thoughtfulness and care when Frozensky has a bleeding cut, and he immediately demands to know how it happened. [[4]]

Cedarkit fails in an attempt to impress his sire with warrior moves in Goodbye Blue Skies. While ineptitude at attacks by no means directs one towards medicine-cat-ship, I think the art of healing would suit Cedarkit much better than the art of battle. While he still has romantic ideas of glory and protecting WindClan from fierce some enemies, he will be dismayed with reality of bloodshed; killing others, on or off a battlefield, would make the tom extremely disturbed and unhappy. Still, he is young, and while he may never learn to love bloodshed, he would learn how to fight, and he would go to war out of duty. Ergo, he would have a place in WC if he were not chosen to be Brightsky's apprentice, even if I think he'd never reach his true potential. [[5]].

2.) Cedarkpaw's face was alight with excitement and interest, though there was a small wrinkle of apprehension within his pools of aqua eyes as well. Here was a chance to prove his worth, both to Brightsky and himself!

Eagerly he eyed the three selections before him. The grapes he could eliminate right away; they were best for letting dirt pass easily, along with urine and such impurities. He lingered, however, over the last two. "Feverfew . . ." he muttered, sniffing at it, then looked hastily up at his mentor. "No, wait, 's'not my answer! I'm just thinking aloud, see." The leaves were easy to identify, with their distinct shape and strong scent. The other herb, a pawful of seeds, he had a bit of trouble with, but finally decided that -- according to their size, color, and the bits of elongated wings still attached to some -- they were probably the seeds of the ash plant. Now ash was good for . . . "pain, yes, but what else? - ah, tightness in breathing, I think."

"Feverfew." He mewed levelly, raising bright eyes. Then he gave a sheepish smile as he patted the leaves. "Guess that was my answer, after all." He continued, eager to explain his thinking. "I considered ash seeds, since they ease tightened breathing. But kitcough is exactly that, isn't it? A cough. Coughing, and congestion. That's not tight breathing, I don't think. Maybe it could help, but feverfew'd be more useful in low'ring the fever, and it helps with colds, too, which kitcough is, kind of.

3.) Cedarpaw's ginger forehead furrowed into a frown. "Coldbreeze was right to send you here. In fact, you should have come as soon as you started itching." He tried to sound stern, but sympathy softened his blue gaze. He padded forward and, with his paws, separated the other apprentice's orange fur so that he could peer at the small red raised bumps on her skin.

It was as he had expected. "You have fleas," he tutted, drawing back. "Now they're more annoying than anything, so don't worry," he soothed. "The only danger is that the bites might get infected, but Brightsky and I can make sure that doesn't happen." He started running through a list in his mind, murmuring quietly to himself. "First, a wash in running water. Garlic to drive the fleas away . . . Burdock, Daisy, Little Daisy, Dandelion, Horsetail, Marigold, Thyme, and Willow will ease pain, inflammation, and itch. For healing and prevention of infection, Celandine, Chervil, Comfrey . . . hmm, Yellow and Red Dock, of course."

Cedarpaw abruptly looked up at his patient. "Oh, did you say that anycat else was complaining of itching? Have them come here, too, once Brightsky comes back and we get you treated. We want this flea infestation nipped in the bud."

4.) Cedarpaw rasped his tongue over the white toes of his forepaws, then swiped a paw behind each of his ears. Finished with bathing the scents of herbs from his fur, he padded out cheerily towards the freshkill pile. His good humor barely dipped when he saw the meager supply; he wasn't that hungry anyway. Besides, this gave him the chance to go hunting with his clanmates.

Eager to set out, he scanned the snowbound camp for WindClanners that appeared to not be occupied with any duties at the moment. As much as Cedarpaw loved his work in the medicine cat den, he was longing for some fresh air, the crisp sound of snow beneath his paws, and perhaps some engaging conversation with his fellows.

5.) I have been an active, cooperative member of CoSC for more than three years now. I am an adept writer, and have much love for this site. I have helped with the Project Information Drive on several occasions, and anticipate that I will participate there many more times in the future. If I am chosen with the honor and responsibility of joining the Junior Staff, I would bring a fresh perspective to the rest of the staff. I also hope to boost activity here. In having a MCA character, I will take the first step by becoming Junior Staff and "get my feet wet" instead of diving all in and becoming, say, a clan leader.
