Charredleaf kneaded the underwater mud with grateful paws as she sank lower into the blessedly cool water of the River.

She was taking a dip in a thus far successful attempt to beat the heat. She'd already brought down a duck earlier---it was buried nearby for safekeeping---and as she'd sweltered a long while under the somnolent stillness of the muggy air stalking it and finally bringing it down, she felt justified in getting cooled down and slowing her pounding heart before she continued on.

Her fear of the River had begun with her near-drowning as a kit and worsened with the advent of the Otter that had snatched her brother and Sleekstar. Perhaps she would always be wary of the dangers that deep waters could bring. But Charredleaf's unbreakable will absolutely refused to be crippled by any fear, especially one so unbecoming for a RiverClanner. Swimming now helped prove to herself that she could overcome anything she set her mind to.

(Plus it was a great way to cool off under a green-leaf sun.)

then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
It was hot. Way too hot.

Silverlark slunk toward the river, keeping an eye out for any prey that felt like conveniently running across her field of vision. She was out of camp on a walk, not specifically to hunt, but you never knew your luck.

Luck did not deliver any prey into the RiverClan warrior's waiting paws, however, so she switched her focus to the river ahead of her. It looked welcoming and alive, compared to the morbidly still heat that seemed to have sunk its claws into the morning air. Of course, the heat was preferable to the chill of leaf-bare, but that didn't stop it from being uncomfortable.

Apparently Charredleaf thought the same thing, Silverlark noted with some amusement as she approached the bank and saw the other warrior already in the river. Well, well. This could be fun. If the younger cat hadn't seen her approaching already, perhaps she could give her a little scare. (Well, she had to get her laughs in somehow.) The gray tabby dropped into a crouch and inched her way forward until she was nearly at the edge of the bank, then leapt in the river next to Charredleaf with a splash. She shook water droplets off her head, then gave the other cat what she hoped was an innocent, dignified look. "Charredleaf," she meowed in greeting. "What a coincidence! I was just going for a swim as well."

by the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore.

Charredleaf was caught entirely off guard.

When she glimpsed sudden movement in her peripheral vision, she turned towards it, orange eyes wide.

Thus Charredleaf got a face full of water, before she even had a chance to think, much less time to feel frightened surprised.

"Pleh!" Charredleaf spat out water, blinking hard. A blurry image of her clan-mate took shape---definitely not an otter---but that did not make the mottled warrior feel much better. "Silverleaf!" Her mew was exasperated.

She splashed me on purpose! Charredleaf thought, unconvinced by the tabby's innocent look. If all Silverleaf had wanted was a swim, there was no need to go jumping in like a crazy Twoleg-kit. Well....two can play at this game!

Charredleaf's whiskers twitched with burgeoning excitement, her irritation dissipating. She batted suddenly at the water's surface, aiming to splash her companion in turn.

"Here, lemme help cool you off," she mewed in mock-sympathy.

Minnowleaf's body pulsated with heat and her tongue rasped across her maw with thirst. The day was especially unbearable right now, and the elder warrior longed to feel the cool river water against her limbs. Walking slowly out of camp, her tail limp behind her, Minnowleaf headed down towards river bank where the cheerful sounds of water splooshing against rocks washed over her ears. Mixed in with this sound was another that she found rather familiar; the voices of other cats. The calico she-cat picked up her pace to see who else had decided to take a break from the heat and her ears perked as she recognized the figures. "Charredleaf, Silverlark! Hello!" Doubting that they could hear her call over their ruckus, Minnowleaf moved closer into the shallows of the river a smile moving into her bright eyes. The cool water felt incredible on her paws and she sighed in relief.

Charredleaf halted in her game and turned to look back over her shoulder, her smile already broadening at the familiar voice.

"Minnowleaf!" she crowed happily. "Come join us!" Her blunt tail swished behind her, scattering droplets of water glistening in the sun. Orange eyes sparked with mischievous glee as she watched the other enter the River: "The water does feel wonderful, doesn't it? ...But wouldn't you cool down faster if I did...this?"

And without further ado, she scooped up a pawful of water and flung it towards her calico friend's pelt. Charredleaf had noticed that Minnowleaf had been acting more and more boring lately, like she was slowing down, or something. Which was quite silly, in the energetic cat's not-so-humble opinion. After all, Minnowleaf wasn't that much older than her. Not even a full season older, just, what, eight moon older than her? It wasn't time to be an elder, yet!

She hoped to surprise the she-cat into having a little fun. And maybe, after they'd cooled off some and played a bit refined their swimming techniques, she could finally broach a topic she'd been wanting to discuss with Minnowleaf for some time, now.... about becoming a mother. Providing RiverClan with future generations, yes, but...Charredleaf rather wanted more than that, though she couldn't pinpoint exactly why, or even what she was feeling. She didn't really have any tom in mind, either... but she felt that Minnowleaf could help.

The blue-eyed RiverClanner was a mother of Ashpaw---and Reedpaw, who sadly was in StarClan now, one of the many casualties of the brutal past leaf-bare---and Charredleaf wanted to get some insight on choosing a good tom. Because, well, she really didn't know how to go about anything, really, that didn't have to do with hunting or patrols or battle training. She and her sole littermate, Crimsonback, had never known their sire, nor had their dame Splotchsky liked to talk about him much, so she had little guidance on what qualities, exactly, a she-cat ought to look for if she wanted more than just a itter, but a good father for her kits, too. While Charredleaf had some ideas, she wanted to hear Minnowleaf out first. And who knows? Maybe Silverlark could provide some insight, too!
