Here is the document draft for a proposed additional training document for Clan Cats called special skills to address the presence and required levels of various skills amongst the clans. This is just a draft, so changes, expansions, additions and subtraction should all be proposed!

There are several skills that are considered more critical in some clans over others. In certain clans higher levels of proficiencies in certain skills are required. Much like the Special Hunting Techniques they are not all learned to the same degree in each clan.

Swimming

The art of swimming involves the ability to manage one's own body in the water and control one's location within the water. * Natural Instinct - All cats have the instinct to both paddle and find up/the surface.

  • Basic Competence - The cat is expected to be able to tread water and avoid drowning.
  • Mastery - The cat should be able to swim well and control one's trajectory in water.

Clan - Level Required - Notes

  • Thunder - Basic Required -
  • River - Mastery Required -
  • Wind - None - This skill is not known to WC beyond natural instinct
  • Shadow - Basic Required -

Mud-skipping

Certain clans must cope with a high level of mud. In accordance both moving through mud, and tactics for escaping mud-holes are taught. * Basic Competence - Recognizing mud-holes along with avoidance tactics and ways to safely circumvent them.

  • Intermediate Competence - The art of escaping with assistance and assisting an escape are taught.
  • Mastery - The cat is expected to be able to escape from all but the deepest mud under their own power and without assistance.

Clan - Level Required - Notes

  • Thunder - Optional -
  • River - Optional, Basic or better encouraged -
  • Wind - None - This skill is not know to WC, who live on high ground.
  • Shadow - Mastery Required - The swamps are particularly dangerous.

Climbing

Climbing trees, while extremely dangerous, is a skill that some clans feel must be taught to at least some level of competence due to the territory the clan lives in. Clan Cats do not learn to hunt in the trees, but may use them as a means to overlook larger sections of the territory and the like.

  • Basic Competence - The ability to climb and get down without getting stuck, along with the spotting the earmarks of dangerous to climb trees.
  • Intermediate Competence - The ability to climb and get down in addition to being stead enough to do some moving.
  • Mastery - The ability to climb, get down, and move about with a reasonable level of comfort.

Clan - Level Required - Notes

  • Thunder - Intermediate Required, Mastery Encouraged -
  • River - Basic Required, Intermediate Encouraged -
  • Wind - Basic Required, Intermediate Encouraged -
  • Shadow - Basic Required, Intermediate Encouraged -

Running

While the act of running is know to all clans, the true art and technique of it as a special skill is taught in clans that have territory that requires both speed and stamina for hunting styles.

  • Basic Competence - The general level of skill expected of all warriors.
  • Intermediate Competence - The cat is expected either to have high stamina or the ability to produce great bursts of speed.
  • Mastery - The cat is expected to have both high stamina and the ability to produce great bursts of speed.

Clan - Level Required - Notes

  • Thunder - Basic Required -
  • River - Intermediate Required -
  • Wind - Mastery Required -
  • Shadow - Intermediate Required -

I think in RiverClan Basic Mud-Skipping should be required, or at least highly encouraged, particularly with the marshlands on the southwest border of RC territory.

  • What would distinguish Basic Competence from Master Level Competence?
  • Are the mud-holes we're talking about like quicksand?

In accordance both moving through mud and tactics for escaping mud-holes are taught." Shall we add recognizing mud-holes and avoiding getting stuck in them to this list? I imagine a cat could master the skill of feeling for steady ground, especially in the case of a thin crust forming over a mud-hole after hot, dry weather.

Maybe this is too basic, but I think choosing the right tree to climb --- studying the layout of the branches, spying out rot --- is important in Tree-Climbing, too.

Hmm... How on earth did I write this whole file and leave out competence level definitions for Mud-skipping? It's weird how stuff like that happens in the drafting process. This is why I always put stuff up for comment.

Thus... Add this to the Mud-skipping entry: * Basic Competence - Recognizing mud-holes along with avoidance tactics and ways to safely circumvent them.

  • Intermediate Competence - The art of escaping with assistance and assisting an escape are taught.
  • Mastery - The cat is expected to be able to escape from all but the deepest mud under their own power and without assistance.

The mud holes I'm envisioning are the type that you see news stories about horses and other animals getting stuck in while walking through. The sucking, grabbing, binding type of mud. I'm not sure how, where, or if that needs to end up in the document...

Tweaked RC Mud-skipping requirement from "Optional" to "Optional, Basic or better encouraged".

Also edited basic in Climbing basic competence to "The ability to climb and get down without getting stuck, along with the spotting the earmarks of dangerous to climb trees."

Minor suggestion for Swimming: "All cats have the instinct to both paddle and find up/the surface."

  • The wording is a bit confusing. Maybe just take out the "up", so it reads: "All cats have the instinct to both paddle and find the surface."
