^ The listed seasons are those in which the herb is ready in some way for harvest. Consult the collection methods below for details.
Collecting & Storing Inner Bark
When to Collect : New-leaf, as the thaw begins
How to Collect : Using the claws, carefully remove the bark in sections a paw's width across and a tail's length long. Once the outer bark is removed, the process is repeated to remove the inner bark.
How to Preserve : Dry the strips of inner bark in the shade.
How to Store : Store in a cool, dry place in loose piles. Care should be taken to rotate often, as any moisture will destroy the herb.
Collecting & Storing Seed (Acorn)
When to Collect : Leaf-fall, just as the seeds are ready to drop
How to Collect : Take only seeds that have intact shells, and only those that come from the branches (never use windfall acorns). Seeds should be of good color and rich odor.
How to Preserve : Set out in full sun long enough to dry the outer shell.
How to Store : Store in a cool, dry place away from the light. Keep in a single layer so rot is easier to spot
Collecting & Storing Leaf Buds
When to Collect : New-leaf, as they emerge
How to Collect : Gently remove the leaf buds from the branches, taking care to take only the freshest and greenest.
How to Preserve : Set out in full sun until fully dry.
How to Store : Store in a cool, dry place in loose piles.
