Characters

Original Characters

  • Flurrytail: Flurrytail was Nagini's first created cat. Amazingly, her sheet was declined less than three times before it was accepted. Nagini liked the idea of a happy-go-lucky cat who was young at heart, and felt that the look of a Balinese was perfect for Flurrytail. Eventually, she decided she needed to figure out how Flurrytail's genes got into the ThunderClan pool, and so she created a giant family tree and a plausible story as to why Flurrytail's ancestors came to ThunderClan. While Nagini considers her first post as Flurrytail to be horrendous, she acknowledges that without it, ThunderClan would be lacking the hate that exists between Rosestorm and Flurrytail, and we all know how dull that would be. On the subject of Flurrytail's pairing with Fiercestorm, Nagini contemplated it for weeks before she could finally work up the nerve to ask Fernwhisker, Fiercestorm's player, her thoughts on the pairing. To Nagini's delight, Fernwhisker thought it was great and was unfazed by the age difference of the two cats (that had freaked out some of the staff). Fiercestorm and Flurrytail's pairing is Nagini's favorite.
  • Elmstar: Nagini didn't initially plan to create Elmstar, despite how ShadowClan needed a deputy. She was won over, however, and Elmstar was born. Nagini's initial unwillingness to apply for the deputy slot played into Elmstar when she decided that he wouldn't be the typical deputy, or, one might argue, the typical Clan cat. His quiet nature, self-doubt, and value of self-preservation already set him apart, and his reluctance to be a deputy continued that. If his Clan were in a battle it couldn't win, or about to be in such a fight, Elmstar would order everyone to retreat rather than be wiped out. He has a healthy respect for his enemies, and Elmstar would rather be at peace with them and interpreted as weak rather than be fighting and dying in battle. This nature of his makes Elmstar one of Nagini's favorite cats.
  • Heronflight: Heronflight was an unborn kit when Nagini adopted her. Nagini was interested in playing the daughter of a famous father she'd never meet, among other things. Heronflight's aggression and attitude greatly contributed to Nagini's applying for her for the slot of RiverClan's medicine cat apprentice. Nagini loved the idea of having such a cat as a healer and still wonders just what StarClan was thinking when they allowed Heronflight to become Seafur's successor, since Heronflight would be slightly less dangerous as a warrior than as a medicine cat.
  • Batswift: The idea for Batswift had been in Nagini's head ever since she received the list of phenotypes for Flurrytail/Fiercestorm kits. She loved the idea of an almost mini-Fiercestorm running about ThunderClan with her own ideas about justice and the way it should be served. Nagini also considers it a happy coincidence that Batswift'll be a bit of a foil to her brother.
  • Maelstrom: Maelstrom was created when Nagini decided that she wanted a cat in the Cats of Camelot, but not necessarily one who would blindly follow Pendragon.
  • Seraphina: Seraphina was created when Nagini rediscovered her love of Egyptian Maus and madwomen, thus the purebred bigot was born. Nagini also enjoyed the idea of her having a great, though unrequited, love for Pendragon.
  • Ceridwen: Ceridwen was created because Nagini wanted one of the royal kittens. Ceridwen was first inspired by goddesses of wisdom and witches, then developed a conflict between the way that she wants to be and the way that she is.
  • Reynard: Reynard was born out of Nagini's love of fairy tale tricksters. His slightly devil-may-care attitude and cunning makes Reynard increasingly fun to play. Nagini also wanted to have an open-minded loner character.

Adopted Characters

  • Nightmoth: Nagini adopted Nightmoth as a kit after her original player, Silith, left CoSC. The chance at playing a blind character greatly interested Nagini and she quickly turned Nightmoth into a Fierceblooded cat (though the Fierceblood is somewhat subdued by her blindness) to make it more fun.
  • Echobreeze: Nagini adopted Echobreeze as a kit after his original player, Kole, resigned from CoSC. Nagini was tempted to go for him because she'd never had a WindClan cat before, and because the poor thing needed someone to play him.
  • Sparrowflight: Nagini adopted Sparrowflight after she had been sitting in the adoption bin for two years. Sparrowflight had always been a cat that she liked due to her personality and Nagini had felt bad that she'd been unplayed for so long, but she couldn't think of a satisfying way to free up a slot for Sparrowflight that didn't involve retiring Flurrytail earlier than Nagini would have liked. A solution was found during a conversation with Kitsu, however, and Nagini applied for Sparrowflight quickly after it had been implemented.
  • Loki: Nagini had not originally intended to adopt Loki, but Blackheart wanted her to save him from death, and so she did. Nagini considers Loki an interesting cat and he's the first non-blank slate kit character that she's adopted. He's also the first PC character of hers that she's killed off.

Character Trivia

Flurrytail

  • Flurrytail's upbeat personality is somewhat inspired by those of Emily of the film Corpse Bride and Rikku of the video game Final Fantasy X.
  • Flurrytail was named after snow flurries. Nagini gave her the "-tail" ending due to her fluffy plume of a tail.
  • Nagini affectionately refers to the pairing of Flurrytail and Fiercestorm as Flurrystorm (Fernwhisker likes to call it Fierceflurry).
    • Nagini has also given them the nickname McFlurry (inspired by the McNaming of things in Grey's Anatomy), though she usually calls them McFlurry when talking about anything regarding future kits, with the kits being called McFlurries.
  • Flurrytail is descended from the purebred Balinese kittypets of the Toujours Jour cattery.
    • Dawnstep, Duskstep, George, Morningleaf, and Palepelt are all purebred cats, though Morningleaf and Palepelt don't know that.
    • Dawnstep and Duskstep, entered ThunderClan as loners long before Fiercestar's reign, as a result of being separated from their owners and family in a fire. Flurrytail has no knowledge of her kittypet roots, however, as Dawnstep and Duskstep never revealed their true ancestry to the ThunderClan cats.
    • The name of her ancestors' cattery, Toujours Jour, means "always day" in French and Nagini picked it as a parallel to Toujours Nuit.
      • Flurrytail has a number of kittypet relatives, both by blood and matings. By matings, she is related to Seraphina of Toujours Nuit, through a relative of Flurrytail's who mated with an Egyptian Mau.
  • Flurrytail's more immediate family is quite closely related.
    • Dawnstep was George's paternal aunt.
    • Morningleaf was Dawnstep and George's daughter, but everyone believed that Duskstep (who isn't related to Dawnstep) was her father.
    • This makes Palepelt Morningleaf's half-brother and the half-uncle of Morningleaf and Stonefoot's kits Lilacear and Barktail.
      • Throw in the fact that everyone thought Morningleaf and Palepelt were full siblings and you've got "Holy Incest, Batman!"
      • Even without that fact, Flurrytail's still the result of inbreeding (but so is pretty much everyone in the Clans' world).
      • On another note, everyone in the Clan family lived to see Flurrytail in the flesh, although Barktail died two moons later.
  • Flurrytail's family members were all quite quick to have kits. Hey, there was a war going on! But still...
    • Dawnstep was thirteen-moons-old when she mated with nine-moon-old George and got pregnant, then fifteen-moons-old when she had Morningleaf.
      • She was twenty-four-moons-old when she got pregnant by Duskstep, who was twenty-one-moons-old. They were twenty-six and twenty-three-moons-old respectively when Palepelt was born.
    • Morningleaf was twelve-moons-old when she mated with and got pregnant by fourteen-moon-old Stonefoot. She was fourteen-moons-old when she had her kits.
    • Lilacear was fourteen-moons-old when she mated with seventeen-moon-old Palepelt and sixteen-moons-old when she had her daughters.
    • Flurrytail was forty-two-moons-old when she finally mated with the then twenty-one-moons-old Fiercestorm.
  • In regards to characters other than those listed in her character sheet, Flurrytail is:

Elmstar

  • Elmstar was partly inspired by Johnny Depp's portrayal of Ichabod Crane in Tim Burton's film Sleepy Hollow (Elmstar's fear of spiders is a reference to this), Johnny's portrayal of Victor Van Dort in Tim's other film Corpse Bride, and by Edward Norton's portrayal of Jack the narrator in Fight Club.
  • Nagini gave him the starter "elm" because elm trees are associated with darkness and depression. The ending of "-cloud" comes from the way the black fur on his body is spreads across his back and makes it look as if a cloud constantly casts its shadow on him.
  • The cats who gave Elmstar his nine lives and the gifts of the lives they gave are:
    1. Leopardtrack - life of courage
    2. Starlingsong - life of charisma
    3. Thunderface - life of hope
    4. Silverheart - life of love
    5. Frogstep - life of charity
    6. Thymetail - life of wisdom
    7. Ravenwing - life of selflessness
    8. Cedarshadow - life of compassion
    9. Whitestar - life of confidence, faith, healing
  • Out of all Nagini's characters, Elmstar is attracted to the most cats: Heathertail; Lionheart; Sagepelt; and Squirrelfur.
    • While he's only publicly admitted his feelings for Squirrelfur and plans to keep it that way, he's actually the most in love with Sagepelt, but he'll never attempt to pursue anything more than the platonic relationship he has with her.
    • Elmstar's love of multiple cats was one of the reasons ShadowClan got nicknamed the "Clan of Love".

Heronflight

  • Heronflight's personality was greatly inspired by that of Princess Azula, from the series Avatar: The Last Airbender. She is also a little inspired by Lady Macbeth, of Shakespeare's Macbeth.
  • Herons are seen as good omens and symbols of rebirth. Nagini gave Heronflight that starter to invoke a sense of irony and appearance vs. reality.
  • Heronflight's eyes opened nine days after she was born. Nagini chose that length of time because the number nine is lucky in Chinese culture (it sounds like the word for "long-lasting"), but unlucky in Japanese culture (it sounds like the word for "distress"). By coincidence, Heronflight was born on the ninth day of a month.

Nightmoth

  • Nightmoth is somewhat inspired by the character Toph from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Echobreeze

  • Nagini doesn't quite know what has inspired Echobreeze yet, but she does know that he's fully gay.

Batswift

  • Batswift's name and character were inspired by Batman and Batwoman (Kate Kane, not Kathy), respectively, of the Batman franchise. Nagini imagines that Batswift's life will not be quite as dark as the Bat-Family's though.

Maelstrom

  • Maelstrom's personality was originally inspired by the sea and the character Calypso from the Pirates of the Caribbean films, but Nagini acknowledges that Maelstrom's more mellow than she planned. Nagini also liked the idea of a cat who knew more about fairy tales and legends than philosophy.
  • Maelstrom's appearance was inspired from her name. Nagini found that the classic tabby pattern of a silver-blue Maine Coon was a perfect fit for Maelstrom's stormy look.
  • The names of Maelstrom's mother and father, Tia and Jack, were also inspired by the Pirates of the Carribbean films. Tia is named after the character Tia Dalma, and Jack is named after Captain Jack Sparrow.
    • A maelstrom is a very powerful whirlpool. The names of Maelstrom's sisters are also references to the sea: Calypso is a sea nymph from Greek mythology; the word isla means "island" in Spanish; and a tempest is a storm, especially one with severe winds.
  • Maelstrom speaks with a posh British accent.

Seraphina

  • Seraphina's personality was greatly inspired by that of Bellatrix Lestrange of the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling. She is also a little inspired by Lady Macbeth, of Shakespeare's Macbeth.
  • The name of Seraphina's cattery, Toujours Nuit, means "always night" in French. It was inspired by the motto of Bellatrix's family, the Black family. The Black family motto is Toujours Pur, meaning "always pure" in French.
    • By matings, Seraphina is related to Flurrytail of ThunderClan, through a Balinese queen who mated with one of Seraphina's relatives.
      • The name Toujours Nuit is meant to be a parallel to Toujours Jour, the name of the cattery from which Flurrytail is descended.
  • The names of Seraphina's mother and father, Victoria and Victor, were inspired by the characters of the same name from Tim Burton's film Corpse Bride.
  • Seraphina's sister Celia was named after the character Celia Hodes from the television series Weeds.
  • Seraphina's mother and father, Victoria and Victor, are closely related.
    • They're first cousins once removed.
  • The name Seraphina is derived from the Hebrew word seraphim which translates to "firey ones". In Jewish and Christian mythology, a seraph is a celestial being. In Christian mythology, the seraphim represent the highest rank of angels.
    • The names of Seraphina's siblings also have meanings: Azim is an Arabic name, meaning "mighty"; Celia is a Latin name meaning "heaven"; and Shanti is a Sanskrit name, meaning "peace".
  • Nagini jokes that Seraphina would be the dominant one in a relationship and in the bedroom.

Ceridwen

  • Ceridwen's personality is inspired by certain goddesses and witches, as well as the inattentive type of ADHD.
  • Ceridwen is named after the Ceridwen of Welsh mythology.
  • Ceridwen's appearance matches that of Nagini's cat Bella.

Reynard

  • Reynard was inspired by a handful of trickster characters, specifically Robin Hood, Reynard the Fox, and Captain Jack Sparrow. Reynard's alias "Sparrow" is a reference to Captain Jack.
  • Nagini made Reynard a slim red tabby to invoke a bit of a fox-like appearance.
  • Reynard's mother, Tiffany, was a domestic cat before she met Russell, who had always been a nomadic feral.
    • The name Tiffany was inspired by that of the jewelry store Tiffany's.
    • The name of Reynard's father, Russell, was inspired by "The Nun's Priest's Tale" of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. The name of the fox that attacks Chanticleer is Russel.
  • The name Reynard is a variation of the name for the character Reynard the Fox. One version of his name, Renard, is the modern French word for fox.
  • The name of Reynard's sister, Robin, comes from both the bird and the character Robin Hood.
  • In Nagini's opinion, the theme song of the Cats of Maupertuis (aka the Barn Cats) is "Men in Tights", from Mel Brooks' film Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
